More InformationEpiPen Adult is a disposable auto-injector which provides a single dose of epinephrine, often a life-saving treatment in cases of severe anaphylactic reactions or severe asthma attacks when emergency medical treatment is not immediately available. EpiPen Adult delivers a single dose of 0.3 mg (300 mcg) epinephrine. This treatment is intended for patients weighing 30 kilograms (66 pounds) and up. For patients weighing under 30 kilograms (66 pounds) please see EpiPen Junior, which provides a smaller dose of 0.15 mg (150 mcg). When Every Second Counts, Use EpiPen Anaphylaxis is a severe response to an allergen, such as bee venom, latex, or food additives. In most cases, the more serious the reaction, the faster symptoms occur. Individuals who have previously had serious reactions to an allergen are likely to have serious reactions when exposed again. Life-threatening symptoms of anaphylaxis include: Difficulty breathingSevere swelling of lips, tongue or throatWeak or erratic pulseCardiac arrestConfusion or unconsciousnessDramatic drop in blood pressureSevere abdominal pain or incontinence In worst cases, the above symptoms can develop just seconds or minutes after exposure to an allergen. Untreated, death or permanent damage can occur very quickly. Around the world, the standard treatment to immediately get anaphylactic symptoms under control is epinephrine. EpiPen Adult delivers that epinephrine, buying time to seek medical treatment. Individuals at risk of anaphylaxis, or caretakers for those who are, typically carry a minimum of two EpiPens, or some similar treatment, with them at all times, as well as keep supplies in places frequented — work or school, vehicles, and so forth. While epinephrine is a proven treatment for controlling asthma attacks, ideally it is delivered in aerosolized form, via inhaler or nebulizer. However, in an emergency situation where asthma is life-threatening, administering EpiPen will help open airways. Likewise, if injectable epinephrine is not available, aerosolized epinephrine will help treat anaphylaxis — though it will not be as effective as an injection. Using EpiPen Adult EpiPen Adult is designed to be used quickly and easily, though it may not be readily obvious how to use the device when under pressure during an emergency. Patients and caregivers are advised to familiarize themselves with the product before a life-or-death situation. EpiPen Adult is designed to be used through clothing.Pull the safety release straight out of the top of the pen.Swing the base of the pen firmly into the upper thigh, through clothing. There will be an audible click to indicate the needle has extended.Do not use EpiPen on other parts of the body; this may reduce effectiveness and cause tissue damage.Hold the device in place on the upper thigh for 10 seconds.After removing the pen, massage the injection site for another 10 seconds.If symptoms persist or worsen after 5 to 15 minutes, a second dose should be given using a new pen. It is normal for some liquid to remain in EpiPen Adult after use. Pens are designed to work only once; if the needle has extended, it will not deliver more medication. Since second doses are sometimes required to control symptoms, a minimum of two pens should be on-hand at all times. Warnings When faced with a life-or-death situation such as severe anaphylaxis or asthma, there are no preexisting conditions, drug interactions, or any other reasons to avoid administering EpiPen. Keep in mind that epinephrine is utilized by the body quickly, usually within 10 to 20 minutes.
