It can be used as an aid to quit smoking or simply used to ease cravings when smoking is not an option, such as on a long flight. Habitrol gum is also available in fruit flavor. Habitrol also makes patches for those determined to quit; they should not be used as-needed for temporary blocks to smoking. Nicotine Withdrawal Nicotine is a potent drug, which has a number of effects on the cardiovascular system. Nicotine, no matter how it is delivered, and its withdrawal will both influence blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rhythm. In patients who have issues with the cardiovascular system, too much nicotine or sudden withdrawal can have very serious consequences; patients with cardiovascular conditions should speak with a doctor before attempting to quit. Patients without cardiovascular issues will still likely experience some withdrawal symptoms, which include: Irritability Anxiety Mood swings Headache Sweating Difficulty concentrating Difficulty sleeping Increased appetite Restlessness The above have both physical and psychological origins, meaning that while Habitrol Mint Gum may help alleviate physical symptoms significantly, it may not eliminate psychological symptoms entirely. Patients who simply can't smoke for a few hours usually handle the situation fine with a nicotine-replacement product like Habitrol Mint Gum; patients trying to quit may have more difficulty. It's important that patients are resolved to quit. One aspect of psychological addiction is that patients need to be doing something with their mouth and/or hands. Habitrol Mint Gum addresses this to some extent, as users can keep their mouth busy chewing. Quitting is difficult, but with Habitrol Mint Gum most smokers will find it gets easier and easier to resist every day. Using Habitrol Mint Gum Habitrol Mint Gum is available in two strengths, 2 mg or 4 mg. Which strength is chosen largely depends on how heavily the patient smoked; in general, those who smoke less than 20 cigarettes per day should go with 2 mg, while those who smoke over 20 per day should go with 4 mg. The gum can be used as-needed. When feeling the compulsion to smoke: Remove one gum from its packaging and chew it until the taste becomes strong. Once the taste is strong, settle the gum between the gums and cheek until the taste fades. When the taste fades, chew the gum again until the taste is strong, then return it to between the gums and cheek. Continue until chewing no longer produces a strong taste, usually about 30 minutes. Most patients use between 8 and 12 pieces per day of the 2 mg gum. Do not exceed 20 per day. Most patients use between 4 and 6 pieces per day of the 4 mg gum. Do not exceed 10 per day. Chewing the gum releases the nicotine, and when it's rested between the gum and cheek the nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream. This alleviates the physical effects of nicotine withdrawal. Duration of use can be quite variable; in general Habitrol Mint Gum should not be used daily for longer than 9 months without advice of a physician. Some patients continue to use the gum for years; it is a safer alternative to the combustion effects of smoking, though not entirely risk-free. There are two general methods of using the gum to quit; either use the gum as a complete alternative to cigarettes, or use the gum as a replacement for some cigarettes. In the latter smoking is gradually reduced and eventually stopped entirely, with the gum replacing all cigarettes. Which method works best depends on the individual. Lower doses of 2 mg Habitrol Mint Gum can also be used along with low-dose Habitrol Patches, provided 12 pieces of gum are not exceeded per day. Precautions As mentioned above, patients with cardiovascular issues should consult a doctor prior to using Habitrol Mint Gum. Though unlikely, nicotine overdose is a risk, particularly among those who use the gum while continuing to smoke. Symptoms include: Nausea or vomiting Weakness Dizziness Rapid heartbeat Heart palpitations If experiencing the above, stop using the gum until speaking with a doctor. Most women are aware that smoking presents a risk of harm to unborn or nursing babies. While Habitrol Mint Gum presents less of a risk, it does still contain nicotine and there is still a risk of harm. There are a number of non-nicotine products that aid in quitting; mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding may wish to discuss use of those with a doctor.
